In order to complement the training, equipment and operational assistance provided by the Power of Hands Foundation, a social enterprise - Power of Hands Limited - has been established to help in marketing and selling the products produced by our craft workers.
Whilst Power of Hands Foundation has helped the lace makers of Galle to develop a basic core range of lace which can be realistically sold in western markets, Power of Hands Limited has been seeking to develop these markets in which the lace can be sold on a fair trade basis. The sales of original lace items such as table cloths had always relied heavily on the tourist industry that collapsed in the wake of the Tsunami.
Initially costume houses, costume designers and theatres have been targeted. As a result, Galle lace has featured in productions at the Royal Opera House and on costumes for the Oscar winning feature film ‘Golden Age’ and the EMMY winning BBC drama ‘Jane Eyre’.Galle lace products are also available through current exhibitions at National Trust Fenton House in Hampstead, London and The Jane Austen Centre in Bath.
The aim is now, with new lace designs using fine silk and linen thread, to create a more attractive product for Western mainstream as well as specialist markets.
